Abstract

This study investigates the level and sources of foreign language anxiety (FLA) among 35 Yemeni EFL learners at Sana’a University. Using a modified version of Horwitz et al.’s (1986) Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) with  selected items, data were collected on students’ anxiety experiences in English classes. Descriptive statistics and one-sample t-tests were used to analyze the data Results indicated that Yemeni EFL learners experience moderate levels of FLA, particularly in situations related to communication apprehension and fear of negative evaluation. No significant differences were found based on gender or language proficiency. The study concludes that classroom environment and evaluative situations are major contributors to students’ anxiety. Recommendations include creating supportive classrooms, providing constructive feedback, incorporating collaborative activities, and integrating affective components into EFL curricula. Future research should explore interventions to reduce FLA and examine its impact on academic achievement.
